About the Institute
Based at the University at Albany, the Institute of Nonprofit Leadership and Community Development is an interdisciplinary community that works to support and strengthen the work of the nonprofit sector through workforce development, leadership development, innovative partnership, and scholarship. The Institute of Nonprofit Leadership and Community Development is a collaborative of the University at Albany’s Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy; the Colleges of Public Health, Social Welfare, Criminal Justice, Business, and Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cyber Security; Albany Law School; and Albany Medical College. The Institute embodies the University at Albany’s priorities of engagement and service.
History
In the spring of 2013, the University at Albany began to formalize its long partnership with the nonprofit community in the Capital Region by offering a lecture series on current issues in the nonprofit sector. Experts on fundraising, fraud, governance, mergers, and a host of other topics shared their thoughts and facilitated discussion. Over time, departments at the University increased the number of nonprofit-related courses, coordinated a greater number of nonprofit internships and job placements, and conducted community research using both faculty and student teams. We recognized that we could do more for the community working together as a unit, and so the Institute of Nonprofit Leadership and Community Development was born in July of 2016.
In September of 2016, we held a large strategic planning event with members of the nonprofit and university community to help focus our mission and goals. The nonprofit community responded that training and professional development, a collection of online resources, and a hub for the nonprofit community were all high priorities. Since then, we have partnered with the community to answer the call, including an invigorated lecture series, in-depth professional development workshops, improved access to service-learning opportunities for students, a community partnership project, and ENLA, our nonprofit leadership accelerator.
Values
Everything we do is guided by our steadfast commitment to:
